David W. Leopold, DO, FACOP, passed away April 16, 2017, at his home in Sierra Vista, Arizona. He was 80 years old and had practiced for fifty years, retiring in 2012.
After graduation from Kansas City College of Osteopathy and Surgery, Kansas City, Missouri in 1962, he took a pediatric residency at Grand Rapids Osteopathic Hospital, Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1966, becoming certified in 1968.
He started his practice in 1963 as a family practitioner in Tucson, Arizona, and upon completion of his pediatric residency, started his pediatric practice in Tucson.
In 1980, Dr. Leopold joined the faculty of the University of Osteopathic Medicine and Health Sciences in Des Moines, Iowa as a professor of pediatrics. He was discipline head, department of pediatrics from 1983-1997.
Upon leaving his position at UOMHS, he entered into private pediatric practice with the Arizona Family Care Association, Sierra Vista, Arizona, and was pediatric department chairman at Sierra Vista Regional Hospital from 2002-2007.
In addition to many chairmanships and delegateships to many boards, committees and associations, his honors and awards include:
American College of Osteopathic Pediatricians: Pediatrician of the Year – 2012
UOMHS Distinguished Service Award – Professor Emeritus of Pediatrics – 1997
UOMHS Faculty Service Award – 1995
President, Arizona Osteopathic Medical Association – 1973-1974
President, American College of Osteopathic Pediatricians – 1977-1978
President, American Osteopathic Board of Pediatrics – 1984-1985
AOBP Board Member and Certifying Examiner – 1977-1985
Watson Memorial Lecturer – Denver, Colorado – 1976
